Never Put These Foods in the Refrigerator! Here’s Why You’ve Been Doing It Wrong

Almost everyone automatically shoves everything into the fridge the moment they get home from the store. Makes sense, right? Cold = fresh, fresh = good. But what if we told you that the fridge is actually ruining some of your favorite foods? It kills their flavor, changes their texture, and in many cases they spoil faster than if you’d simply left them on the counter. In Germany, this is an especially hot topic – half the products you haul home from Aldi, Lidl, or REWE don’t belong where you’re putting them. Here’s the list that will make you rearrange your entire kitchen.

Eggs – The Biggest Confusion in the Kitchen

Ever noticed that at Aldi, Lidl, REWE, and EDEKA, eggs are sold at room temperature on regular shelves – not in the refrigerated section? That’s because of the cuticula – a natural protective coating on the eggshell that shields it from bacteria for up to 18 days after laying. In Germany – unlike the USA – eggs are not washed after production, so this protective layer stays intact and store refrigeration isn’t needed. But here’s the catch: at home, you should still put eggs in the fridge – because once they’ve been chilled, they can’t go back to room temperature, as condensation forms on the shell, destroys the cuticula, and lets salmonella in. And important: don’t store them in the fridge door – the temperature fluctuates too much there. Best spot: the middle shelf, at a steady 4-7°C (39-45°F).
